Lecture 7 Classical Greece, 500-323BC: When we think of ancient Greece and the ancient Greeks, it is usually the 5 th century which commands our undivided attention. This is the age of the great historians Herodotus and Thucydides, great dramatists like Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus, and the brilliant philosopher Socrates. Meet the People Meet the People An ancient arch frames a view of the coast. The civilization of ancient Greece centered in the islands of the Aegean Sea and the lands bordering both sides of the Aegean, a region that includes most of present-day Greece and the western coast of Turkey. The people who inhabited these areas never numbered more than 1 1/2 to 2 million, yet they produced a culture that is generally considered to be the foundation of Western civilization. The accomplishments of the Greeks (or Hellenes, as they called themselves) in architecture, sculpture, literature, philosophy, science, and politics were often imitated by later cultures, and they continue to dazzle us today. Few peoples have made such lasting contributions to human thought and art. Early Greece: The Mycenaeans. The definition of a 'Greek,' according to the Greeks themselves, was a person whose native language was Greek. Archaeologists and language scholars believe that sometime after about 1900 B.C. There was a movement of peoples speaking an Indo-European language into the Greek peninsula. Their interaction with the peoples already living there produced the Greek language. This culture is called Mycenaean, after one of the leading kingdoms of the time, Mycenae. A typical Mycenaean settlement consisted of a large fortified palace and administrative center, surrounded by villages and farmland. During times of war and disorder, the palace was a place of refuge for the local people, most of whom were farmers. The power of the Mycenaean kings grew, and by about 1250 B.C., they were involved in military expeditions overseas. The famous Trojan War may have been just such an expedition, an attempt by the Mycenaeans to conquer the Asian coastal city of Troy. The Polis, or City-State. ![]() By about 750 B.C., a new type of Greek community, the polis, or city-state, was beginning to take shape. The city-state consisted of a town surrounded by the territory needed to support it. The town and its lands formed an independent state. There were perhaps as many as a thousand different city-states. Most had only a few thousand inhabitants. City-states were also established as colonies of older cities. They were founded along the coastal areas of the Black Sea, southern Italy, the island of Sicily, and what are today France and Spain. These colonies were, like their mother-cities, independent states. They were settled for agricultural and commercial reasons and as a relief from overpopulation at home. The colonies also spread Greek culture throughout the Mediterranean world. The Greeks believed themselves superior to non-Greek-speaking peoples. A non-Greek man, for example, was called a barbaros, because to a Greek his language sounded like bar-bar, or nonsense. This is the origin of the English word 'barbarian,' meaning 'uncivilized.' One of the virtues of the polis system was also one of its failings. The Greeks' fierce love of independence made it impossible for the city-states to unite. They were highly competitive and often at war with one another.
